Your blog, your content, your ranking and Google
Submitted by Ward on Mon, 07/20/2009 - 15:00People often ask me how to improve the search ranking of their blog in Google. There is no magic wand that a web designer can wave in order to make your blog number one in Google, because in the end it really just boils down to 2 things:
- Links to your website
- The quality of your content
But then people ask how do you get links to your website? The answer to this is very simple -- you write quality content. The better, the more interesting, the the more useful, funnier your content is, the more people will link to your page. So basically it would seem that all you can do to improve your search ranking Google is to improve the quality of your content. While this is an excellent rule of theum true there is one other element which is often overlooked, the structure of your content.
Structuring your content for your readers and Google
Most people think that a blog is made up of two elements, a title, some text and maybe some media like photos. Google is certainly interested in your text but there are some elements of the page that Google gives more weight to than your average sentence. Look the following diagram:
A - The page title
B - The URL
C - The article title
GenerallyA, B and C are the same. Although this is not necessarily the case, most software treats them as the same because it simplifies the user's task and lowers the technical know-how to write an article on-line. Therefore, when choosing a title you should aim for a descriptive title - avoid puns and obscure references at all costs when choosing a title. For example, if your writing article about hotels in London, then your title should certainly contain the words Hotel and London.
Not only will this help Google classify your blog article that it will also help people recognise articles that they're interested when they are googling:
D - subheadings
And you shouldn't forget subheadings. Not only do these help humans to scan information, they are given more weight by Google Google as search terms in your document.
